Tips for What to Do After Getting Porcelain Veneers

by Christy Long

Have you recently decided to transform your smile by scheduling an appointment to get porcelain veneers for your teeth? If so, know that the process doesn't stop when you leave the dentist's office. There are actually a few things that you have to do at home to keep your veneers looking their best.

Practice Good Home Oral Hygiene

It's crucial that you still continue to perform good oral hygiene when you are at home. Even though you do have porcelain covering the front surface of your teeth, you are not protected from dental problems. You are still susceptible to gum disease, cavities, and tooth decay. You need to continue to brush and floss your teeth every single day because you can still have issues with a tooth with a veneer on it.

Avoid Abrasive Brushing

Be aware that brushing too hard can cause damage to the dental veneers if you are not careful. That is because the bristles can actually be abrasive against the dental veneers, which can cause them to become scratched. Over time, hard brushing can also cause veneers to become dislodged.

You want to avoid any toothpaste that has abrasive ingredients in it, as well as toothbrushes that have hard bristle brushes. If you are using an electric toothbrush, be gentle with the brush and avoid applying too much pressure. You can cause damage underneath the veneers along the gums if you are not careful with how you use an electric toothbrush.

Avoid Chewing On Hard Foods And Objects

Your new dental veneers can potentially be damaged if you chew on something that is really hard. This can happen accidentally, from doing something as simple as biting down on a popcorn kernel or chewing on ice. It can also happen by putting things in your mouth to chew on that are not food, like pen caps or even your own fingernails.

 Avoid Teeth-Staining Foods And Beverages

There are many foods that are dark in color that are known to cause teeth stains. This includes dark berries, coffee, red wine, and soda. Even if you have veneers, it is best to avoid these foods and beverages to prevent your veneers from becoming stained. You need to treat them as if they are real teeth, and if you are covering up tooth stains that you already have, then those veneers are just as likely to become stained if you maintain the same bad habits.

About Me

Improve Your Smile With Cosmetic Dentistry

I was very unhappy with the way that my front teeth looked. They were crooked and stained with an ugly yellow tint. I asked my dentist if there was anything that could be done to improve them. After discussing the options with my dentist, I decided to have crowns put on my front teeth. The procedure was painless and I wish that I had done it sooner. My name is Constance Graham and I am writing this blog to inform others about cosmetic dentistry. If you don’t like the way your teeth look, speak to your dentist about improving your smile. There are various cosmetic procedures that you can have done such as veneers, crowns, teeth whitening, and dental implants. I hope you use the information in this blog to learn more about cosmetic dentistry and how it can help you.
