Measures You Can Take To Become A Suitable Candidate For A Dental Implant

by Christy Long

Dental implants are often used as foundations for tooth-replacement devices. The implants offer the stabilization of natural dental roots and provide stimulation to the jawbone tissues. Nonetheless, to receive a dental implant, your dentist must agree that you are a good candidate for the device.

Even if you don't meet all the criteria necessary to receive an implant, there are measures that you may be able to take to change your suitability as a candidate. Here are a few of them.

Have a Bone Transplant

A traditional implant requires the jaw bone at the implantation site to be healthy and thick. If your jawbone has thinned due to atrophy, you may still be approved for a dental implant after the bone has been thickened by a bone transplant.

The bone that is used for the transplant may come from an animal, a synthetic source, or your own body. Once the implanted bone material is in place, it can stimulate the production of new jawbone cells to thicken the bone's girth.

Stop Smoking

Smokers have an increased incidence of implant failure. For an implant site to heal properly, the tissues around the wound must receive a good oxygen supply. Smokers frequently suffer from reduced levels of oxygen in the blood. Additionally, a smoker's wounds sometimes heal more slowly.  Moreover, the chemicals in tobacco may irritate the soft tissues of the mouth, making gum disease more likely.

When the gingival tissues around an implant become inflamed, peri-implantitis may develop. This form of gum disease around the dental implant delays or prohibits the healing of the implant wound.

Nevertheless, after you stop smoking, blood oxygen levels rise, and inflamed tissues heal more easily. It is best to stop smoking at least a few months before the placement of a dental implant.

Control Your Blood Sugar

People with uncontrolled blood sugar may also incur issues after their dental implant procedure. As a result, patients with diabetes should be sure to control their blood sugar levels through diet, exercise, and any medications that their doctor has prescribed.

Uncontrolled blood sugar can impair the healing of wounds, including the wound from the implantation procedure. Additionally, high blood sugar levels can increase the likelihood of gum disease. Inflamed gingival tissues may not heal properly around the implantation site.

Schedule a consultation with a dentist in your local area to determine whether you are a good candidate for a dental implant.

About Me

Improve Your Smile With Cosmetic Dentistry

I was very unhappy with the way that my front teeth looked. They were crooked and stained with an ugly yellow tint. I asked my dentist if there was anything that could be done to improve them. After discussing the options with my dentist, I decided to have crowns put on my front teeth. The procedure was painless and I wish that I had done it sooner. My name is Constance Graham and I am writing this blog to inform others about cosmetic dentistry. If you don’t like the way your teeth look, speak to your dentist about improving your smile. There are various cosmetic procedures that you can have done such as veneers, crowns, teeth whitening, and dental implants. I hope you use the information in this blog to learn more about cosmetic dentistry and how it can help you.
