Tips For Helping Your Child To Overcome His Fear Of The Dentist

by Christy Long

If your child is afraid of the dentist and this is causing complications in getting him in the office for cleanings, examinations, and treatment, then you need to take action. Take a few moments to review the following tips that should help your child overcome his fear of the dentist.

Role Play As The Dentist And Patient

By taking some time to role play with your child, you will help him become more comfortable with not only the idea of the dentist but the cleanings and inspection of his teeth. You will want to first allow your child to pretend to be the dentist. Get comfortable in a chair and allow your child to examine your teeth with fingers, a wooden tongue depressor, and a flashlight. Once he is done tinkering around in your mouth, you will want to switch roles. You will then be the dentist who will examine the patient's teeth. Talk with your child and explain all of the things that you  are looking for in his mouth. Make sure to give plenty pf praise, just as a pediatric dentist might do. Doing this a few times will help calm your child's fears of the dentist.

Schedule A Tour Of The Dental Office

Call the dentist office and ask to speak to someone about scheduling a tour of the facility. You will want to explain that you have a child who is experiencing a fear of the dentist. By allowing your child to tour the dentist office on a day when he is not actually being seen as a patient will help ease some fears. Your child should be able to meet some of the staff, check out the waiting room, and maybe even have a chance to it in one of the patient exam chairs that are not in use. If there is time, you might want to see if your child could actually meet face-to-face with the dentist. This way, your child will have a better understanding of what he is to expect on the day of the appointment.

As you can see, there are a couple of good tips to help your child overcome his fear of the dentist. All you have to do now is to put those tips into action. Find a pediatric dentist that is patient with children that have phobias of the dentist in order to get the best result from all of your efforts.

About Me

Improve Your Smile With Cosmetic Dentistry

I was very unhappy with the way that my front teeth looked. They were crooked and stained with an ugly yellow tint. I asked my dentist if there was anything that could be done to improve them. After discussing the options with my dentist, I decided to have crowns put on my front teeth. The procedure was painless and I wish that I had done it sooner. My name is Constance Graham and I am writing this blog to inform others about cosmetic dentistry. If you don’t like the way your teeth look, speak to your dentist about improving your smile. There are various cosmetic procedures that you can have done such as veneers, crowns, teeth whitening, and dental implants. I hope you use the information in this blog to learn more about cosmetic dentistry and how it can help you.
