Answers About Braces When Your Child Needs Them

by Christy Long

If you have recently discovered that your child needs braces, you will likely have a lot of questions about what you and your child can expect. This article will cover a lot of the questions parents tend to have upon learning their child needs braces, as well as answers to those questions. By reading this information, you will know what to expect and can explain things to your child.

What will happen during the appointment?

Probably the biggest question your child will have for you with regards to having their braces put on is whether or not the process will hurt. While you don't want to lie to them, you also don't want to scare them.

The process won't be pleasant, but they shouldn't expect to experience a significant amount of pain either. The most uncomfortable parts will be having their mouth held open for a significant amount of time and having the braces tightened which will pull on their teeth. The discomfort they feel should be able to be controlled with over-the-counter medication.

How will it feel to have the braces on?

When your child first gets the braces on, they will feel a lot of uncomfortable pressure for a few days, but then it will let up and become less noticeable. One thing they should watch out for is parts of the braces rubbing against the inside of their mouth and their tongue. This friction will quickly cause painful sores. It can be avoided by using the dental wax to cover the problem areas of the braces.

Do they have a choice in what the braces look like?

There are a lot of options with regards to the appearance of braces your child can wear. There are braces with colorful and fun looking bands that many younger children like. There are also braces that are clear. The clear braces make it less obvious that they have braces to those they come in contact with.

How do they take care of the braces?

Your child will brush how they normally would. Flossing will take a bit more work because they will have to thread the floss through the braces. Also, your child will need to brush their teeth after every meal, including snacks. Therefore, you should get them a small travel kit they can keep with them for times when they go out eating with friends or are at school.

Now that you can better answer your child's questions regarding braces, you may be able to make the process easier on them and take away some of their concerns.

About Me

Improve Your Smile With Cosmetic Dentistry

I was very unhappy with the way that my front teeth looked. They were crooked and stained with an ugly yellow tint. I asked my dentist if there was anything that could be done to improve them. After discussing the options with my dentist, I decided to have crowns put on my front teeth. The procedure was painless and I wish that I had done it sooner. My name is Constance Graham and I am writing this blog to inform others about cosmetic dentistry. If you don’t like the way your teeth look, speak to your dentist about improving your smile. There are various cosmetic procedures that you can have done such as veneers, crowns, teeth whitening, and dental implants. I hope you use the information in this blog to learn more about cosmetic dentistry and how it can help you.
